Purim Drag Show w/ Freya Rayne

Friday, March 29

7:30pm to 8:15pm
Hillel UW

Seattle WA 98105

On Purim, everything is upside down: According to the Scroll of Esther, Queen Esther, who first appears as a closeted Jew, saves the Jewish people by outing herself and standing up to King Ahashverosh; Haman's plot to kill the Jews flips and leads to his own demise; and the Jews of Shushan, once powerless subjects, become able to control their destiny.

As Rabbi Ari Lev Fornari writes, Purim is “a celebration of subversion, inversion, and transformation.”

We celebrate that subversiveness by dressing in costume on Purim, and as early as 1322 (!), Rav Kalonymus ben Kalonymus wrote about the custom of cross-dressing on Purim. Hillel UW is delighted that drag queen Freya Rayne will be joining us to celebrate Purim in this traditional way!

As we honor Queen Vashti and Queen Esther, who stood up for what was right and good, honor your inner queen, glamorous and proud, bold and loud with drag queen Freya Rayne.

Come out of your skin, your closet, and your familiar face – come as dressed up as you please!

You are welcome to join us for Shabbat dinner beforehand or just for the show afterwards! If you're coming to Shabbat, please make sure to sign up for that, too!
