B-Mitzvah Prep Class

If you didn’t have the opportunity for a Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah or B’nai Mitzvah when you were 12 or 13 years old, join the B-Mitzvah cohort at Hillel UW! (B-Mitzvah is a gender neutral term we are using for a Bar, Bat or B’nai Mitzvah.)

In Autumn quarter, B-Mitzvah students will take Introduction to Hebrew Reading (or equivalent). In Winter quarter, B-Mitzvah students will take Jewish Foundations (or equivalent), plus meet every other week with the cohort (at a mutually agreed upon time) to learn to read specific prayers for the ceremony.

In Spring quarter, the cohort will meet weekly with Rabbi Lauren to learn the specific Torah portion for the B-Mitzvah date and prepare the ceremony. Students also have the opportunity to make their own tallit to wear at the ceremony.

There will be a B-Mitzvah ceremony and celebration at Hillel UW on Saturday morning, May 17, 2025, to which all B-Mitzvah students’ friends and family, as well as the entire Hillel UW community, are invited. Should the cohort determine that they want a shared evening celebration at Hillel, they will also work together in spring quarter to plan it.

If you’d like to join the cohort (and we hope you will!), indicate your interest here, and Rabbi Lauren will be in touch soon!
