Reclaiming Our Narrative: Voices from South Africa

Join StandWithUs and CHAI UW in the HUB, for an exciting talk, by Yolanda and Klaas, two South African activists, who are here to talk about their view of Israeli democracy, the use of South Africa's history of apartheid by other movements, and reclaiming their community's struggle for Justice.

Speakers bio:

Yolanda Makhasi
Yolanda Makhasi is a 25-year-old Primary School Educator and part time student doing Honors degree in the History of African Exudation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is a Branch Executive member of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Ward 35, Durban, Umhlanga. She was a member of the House Committee at the University of Witwatersrand where she completed her Degree in Politics and Anthropology.

Currently, together with a partner, she has been working on an NGO called UbuhleBemfundo. This NGO strives to provide guidance and mentoring programs for Primary and High School kids. They have done sanitary aid drives for a few government schools were they providing girls with sanitary pads for the school holidays. The campaign will form partnerships with local schools in the INK area as well as universities such as University of Kwazulu Natal, Durban University of Technology and Mangosuthu University of Technology. ​


Klaas Mokgomole
Klaas Mokgomole is a former Wits University Student Representative Council Member, former African National Congress Wits Branch Treasurer, former Wits Law Students Council Member, former Wits Sports Council member and Former Wits University 1st team Volleyball player. He has been part of an organization called ZayRah, the organization deals with developing the youth of African countries, gives them leadership skills and business or entrepreneurial skills.

Klaas is the founder and coach of Brainwashers Netball team. The team plays inn the Wits and the Johannesburg league and other tournament held in the Gauteng province. Klaas has been part of South African Democratic Teachers Union career guidance team. The team goes to villages and other disadvantaged areas in South Africa and helps the Grade 12 learners on how to choose a career path and how to apply for funding and admission into institution of higher learning. Klaas believes that whenever you set your mind on something you can achieve.
