No matter your background or beliefs (or lack thereof) – Hillel UW’s cohort-based learning will give you access to richer conversations and connections with amazing peers. We believe in asking big questions and make no claims about the “right” way to experience Judaism. Our job is to provide you time and space to consider the questions and find your own place.

iEngage: Liberal Zionism for the 21st Century
Liberal Zionism is a form of Zionism that aims to reconcile support for the State of Israel with liberal values like democracy, human rights, and equality. It often involves advocating for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and criticizing certain Israeli government policies while still maintaining a commitment to the existence and security of Israel as a Jewish state.
In this six-series cohort-based course — a project of the Shalom Hartman Institute — we will look at frameworks to grapple with contemporary challenges to liberal Zionism. Learners will gain a deeper understanding of the key values that animate liberal Zionism and how to approach the core issues that have emerged during these many months of war. Topics include:
- Understanding Liberal Zionism Today
- The Challenge of Illiberal Zionism
- Zionism: A Colonial Project?
- Grappling with the Charges of Genocide and Apartheid
- Criticism and Solidarity: Liberal Zionism when Israel Offends
- Compassion for the Other in a Time of War
The sessions will be facilitated by Solomon Zisser, Jconnect Director, and Rabbi Lauren, Senior Jewish Educator. Jconnectors and undergraduates from a wide range of backgrounds and political perspectives are invited to join.
